Ever wondered the story behind Alex Anthony Curl System? Well Courtney Bolden sat down with Co-founder, Alex Mnayarji, to get the inside scoop. In an interview for Alex Anthony Curl System TV, Alex and Courtney talk about everything including her mentor, Nicole Ouidad, the story behind Alex Anthony Curl System, and great advice on entrepreneurship and running a business.
Who are some of your biggest beauty influences. Who inspired you most in the industry?
“I’d have to say it’s my mentor Nicole Ouidad. She taught me so much about being a women in an industry dominated by men. She was a family friend and her #1 rule was to not hire family or friends, that was like a big thing. I came out to New York from Rhode Island a few times, would to assist her, and then finally as I was finishing up beauty school, she called me and said “you’re starting next week.” So I had a week to move to New York and find an apartment! But she really taught me discipline and great work ethic, and really showed me there’s a lot more to the industry than just being behind the chair. She also taught me a lot about how to build relationships with clients and opened up my eyes to the world of curly hair and the lack of education in the industry.”
What launch of Alex Anthony Curl System?
“So I was talking to my friend Allison and I was telling her about how I really want to and open up my own salon for curly hair and I was explaining to her the whole concept. Allison is great, she’s a first grade school teacher, she doesn’t really know much about hair let alone how to brush it – she grew up getting blow outs in Chinatown. She and her husband were great, they right away were like “you should do this and we want to be apart of it.” So, we opened up our salon! Initially I didn’t want my own line, I was focusing on just strictly opening up the salon. But when a client with curly that said, “I tried everything – I don’t like any of these products. You have so many great connections with different chemists, why don’t you start your own line?” So I went back to Allison and said “Hey, I know we just launched the salon, but I really want to start our own line and really get into the educating,” she said, “ok, let’s do it!”
Which Alex Anthony Curl System product and/or technique can you not live without?
“Revive. Revive is the #1 thing that I cannot live without. Revive is very versatile in a sense that you can use it whether your hair is going to be straight or curly, it’s your next day refresher – my hair can’t get me 2 or 3 days if I don’t have it.”
What are some of your best tricks for working with curly hair?
“I always like to think thicker the better. One of the biggest tricks is to condition the hair as much as possible. Always apply it when the hair is wet, that way it dries evenly. You also want to make sure whatever product you’re using is water soluble and breathable, you don’t want to layer any heavy oil or silicone, it’s going to be drying out your hair in the process. So you want to use stuff that has ingredients like soy protein, wheat protein, aloe vera, and make sure it’s breathable, that’s my biggest trick. People always towel dry, towel wash, don’t do that – you want to apply the product on when it’s very wet. I always think let curly hair be – day 2 is going to be great, day 3 is going to be great, use hair accessories as much as possible, those are some of my great tips. Oh, and always sleep with your hair up at night. Whether your hair is wet, curly, straight, dry, anything, always sleep with it up at night so it doesn’t cause friction.”
Can you share one quote that inspires you and keep you motivated daily?
I read this one quote one time and which was perfect, “If your hair is done, and you have on the right pair of shoes, you can get away with anything,” and I always tell little girls that. I always think it’s great when you see a little girl embrace her curly hair!”
